Census Records

The earliest recorded census for Newfoundland was for the year 1675. The earliest recorded birth for Port Albert was that of James Pomeroy, who was born in February of 1834. Given the fact that there was no one living in Port Albert until approximately 1883, it is more likely that Mr. Pomeroy was born elsewhere, but called Port Albert home. The oldest officially recorded person living in Port Albert during the time when these census' were taken was John Peckford. Born in 1843 (birthplace unknown), he would have been 78 years old when the 1921 census was recorded.

The information contained within these census pages is drawn from a variety of sources. Some of it was taken from the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland & Labrador. Some was researched through Newfoundland's Grand Banks. These sites provide a wealth of information for anyone doing genealogical research with links to Newfoundland & Labrador. And finally, some of the information was derived from seniors who either are listed in, or who can remember people listed within the census records. It is important that the reader understand that any information contained within these records is all subject to official verification, and should not be taken as absolute.

1921 Census

The 1921 Census contains information relating to 125 individuals broken down into 24 households.

1935 Census

The 1935 Census contained far less information and was far less specific than that of 1921. At the time the census was taken, there were a total of 89 individuals broken down into 19 households.

In researching local communities adjacent to Port Albert, there are three entries worth noting, due to the fact that the individuals concerned list their birthplace as Port Albert. Rita Pelly, James Pomeroy and Eliza Pelly were residing in the nearby village of Beaverton at the time of the 1935 census.
