Great to see an update on the Port Albert site. Hope to see some more information pop up. I just spent some time with my Dad (Jim) and my Aunt Barbara for Dad's 80th birthday. Needless to say, Newfoundland was always a part of our conversations. Take care and I hope to see you an my next trip back to the Rock. Hopefully sooner than later. Jeff Tricco - Scottsdale, AZ - 06/26/10
Looking forward to hopefully meeting you on your next visit. |
My mother's first cousin was Daisy Ginn Peckford from Port Albert. I would like to get in touch with the Peckfords from Port Albert. Thanks. (You can contact Sandy at) sandy@blossomsonthefamilytree.com. Sandy Doyle - New York, NY - 04/20/10 |
I want to thank you for this site. I just found that my Peckfords from Change Islands also came to Port Albert to settle. I would love to know more about John Peckford b 1845 at Change Island and lived at Port Albert. Sandy Doyle - New York, NY - 04/06/10
Can anyone offer Sandy any assistance? |
My mother's cousin, Daisy Ginn Peckford lived in Port Albert with herfamily. My Peckfords orginally came from Change Islands and noticed you have in the oral history their was an John Peckford who came from ChangeIsland and lived with his family at Port Albert. I would love to know who this John Peckford was. In the census for 1921, he is living with his son and stated his date of birth was 1843 at Change Island. Thank you for this site. Now I know that the Peckfords from Port Albert and mine from Change Island are related. Sandy Doyle - New York, NY - 03/29/10
Speaking of census records, the Public Archives has now made the 1945 census available. I am hoping to be able to transcribe the data to include on the site in the near future. |
Thank you for this site I am related to the Lewis and Daisy Ginn Peckford line. My mother was first cousin to Daisy. I would love to connect with her children. Thanks Sandy from New York USA. Sandy Doyle - New York, NY - 03/28/10 |
Enjoyed the trip through the Port Albert Project. Would like to give a shout-out to Don & Mildred (Bennett). Arlene Bennett- Milton, DE - 03/26/10 |
Once again, great job on the site! I love browsing through these pages. I am in the process of making a family tree and would appreciate greatly if anyone has any info on the Mugfords. My grandfather was Harry Mugford, great-grandfather was Lindsay Mugford. I can be contacted at leeler@live.ca. Thank you & keep up the awesome work on this site! Leah Hovinmaki- Thunder Bay, ON - 02/09/10
If anyone can help Leah, please get in touch with her at the above address. |
Hello, my name is John White, and I`m looking for pictures about my great-grandparents house, Ursula & William Mugford. My grandfather was Stewart Mugford, and I`m the son of his daughter, Shirley Mugford-White. Oh , also I`m the second (cousin) of Monique Milley-Houle. Thank you. John White - St. George's, NL - 01/24/10
Visual submissions (pictures) seems to be the overwhelming request from our readers. If anyone has photos to share, please send them along. |
It was nice to see photos of relatives that i did not have the chance to meet, like my great-grandparents William and Hersula Mugford. I met great-uncles Sam and Lindsay Mugford, but never had the pleasure of meeting my great-aunts Ethel and Elsie Mugford. Their brother Absalom Steward Mugford was my grandfather. Thank you for this site and most of all the photos. Anne Marie Young - Stephenville, NL - 01/18/10
Thanks so much Anne Marie. Your great-aunt Ethel died and is buried here in St. John's. Her family moved away to British Columbia after her death. If you're ever in St. John's and have some time, I have some audio from Cecil Mercer where he talks about your grandfather Absalom, and the time he chopped off Absalom's finger. He also talks about your great-grandmother Ursula. |
Nice site. More pics would be nice. Chuck Peckford - Thompson, MB - 10/25/09
We're working on it Chuck. Have you got any yourself that you'd like to send in? |
I happened upon this website through Google and I grew up in Port Albert. I moved away in 1962, my maiden name is Wagg and my grandfather was Thomas Wagg. I had noticed a gentleman commenting by the name of Ross Wagg and I would like to somehow to be able to get in contact with him. I am currently on Facebook, please search my name or email me at joyweste@hotmail.com. Joy Weste - Coledale, AB - 08/08/09 |
I just happened upon this site and saw some photos of people I remember from when I taught school in Port Albert 1963-64. I boarded with the Elliott family - very fine people there. Boyce Hart - Toronto, ON - 07/11/09 |
I promised youu some time ago to submit the Wagg Family of Port Albert. Attached is what I have on them. To the best of my knowledge there are no Waggs in Port Albert at present. Let me know if this fits with your plans for this site. Ross Wagg - Cape Breton, NS - 06/28/09
Thank you so much Ross. Any and all submissions fit in the plans for the Port Albert website. And yes, you are correct in that there no longer are any Waggs living in Port Albert. |
I have enjoyed the Port Albert site, the history, photos, etc. are priceless. Great job!! My husband's father Douglas Day was born in Port Albert. His father was James Day and his grandfather was Thomas William Day, brother of Gideon. Douglas married Mary Ann Gill who was a teacher in Port Albert. Doug, Mary and their children moved to Dildo in the fifties. Doug's parents and his two brothers and sister also moved here. We have heard many stories about growing up in Port Albert and working in the lumberwoods from Doug, Bax and Floyd. We treasure every memory. Our last visit to Port Albert was august 2008. I have some old photos that were given to us by my husband's parents. If you would like to put them on the Port Albert site, you have our permission. Keep up the great work. Edwinna Day - No Location Given - 06/19/09
Please check out the updated photos section. Thank you so much Edwinna for these wonderful photos. |
(Would like to see) more photos. This website was very interesting, especially when you see photos of one's ancestors. Mr & Mrs William Mugford (great grandparents), Elsie (Mugford) King (great aunt), & Samual Mugford (great uncle). Thank you for a history lesson in family. Marie Young - Stephenville, NL - 06/14/09
Like you Marie, we would love to have more photos to publish. Remember that this is YOUR site, so the more material we receive, the better the site will be. |
I recieved a photo tonight from Nicola Goodyear. Her grandfather Lloyd Cuff was in the same regiment as dad. When I saw this photo, it brought tears to my eyes, as dad is in the front centre of the picture. Nicola's grandfather is playing the guitar. Can you post this in the photo gallery and also in the section, Those Who Served? Thanks. Lindsay Mugford - Brampton, ON - 05/18/09
I would be more than happy to post your dad's photo. Thank you for the submission. |
I was wondering who was in the boat with grandfather in one of the photos (Serial 077) on your website. I really enjoy the site and made a slideshow that plays continuously; sure does the heart good to see things I haven't seen since I don't know when, and we all thank you so much for the hard work you put into it.
Hope to hear from you when you get time. Patsy Day (nee: King) - Corner Brook, NL - 05/03/09
I have asked a couple of relatives, and as far as they can recall, it looks to be Fred King at the tiller (rudder), and the small girl is Marjorie Milley (nee: King). Not certain who the bigger girl is. If anyone can help, please let us know. |
No comment provided but we wanted to acknowledge your visit. Pat Williams - Newtown Centre, MA - 02/03/09 |
Hi again Terry. I just finished reviewing all the comments to date. Absolutely wonderful and and so much fun to discover family links of the Mugfords. I love the site. The only thing I would like changed is I would like to see all email addresses included with the comments so we can contact those we would like to. You are free to publish mine.
I am a little confused about the Elliott reunion. I thought it was in the past but some of the comments lead me to think its this summer (2008). If so can you give me the date. I am not connected to the Elliotts, as far as I know, but I may make a trip over that way this summer and perhaps I could schedule it to take in some of the activities and meet some other people connected to the Mugfords. Ben W Patey - Dartmouth, NS - 23/02/09
The Elliott Family Reunion was indeed held during the summer of 2008. As the site gets updated, I am hoping that the attendees will send in some photos so that those who could not attend will be able to see some of the fun activities that went on, and just who showed up!! If anyone would like to contact Ben directly, he can be reached at benpatey@accesswavve.ca. |
Hello Terry, I had a very enjoyable talk with your mom, Dorothy Alexander, I believe she is your mom. From what she tells me we are step-cousins of sorts. I am Ken Mugford's grandson.
Regarding the two in the photo, I have never seen a picture of Luke but I am quite sure the one sitting is not Ken. I have a photo of him in uniform just after he returned from the war and with no cap. I don't see enough resemblence. I sent the photo and some inf along several weeks ago. Perhaps you didn't receive it. Ben W Patey - Dartmouth, NS - 23/02/09
My apologies to you and all of our visitors for the long delay in getting the site updated Ben. With regards to getting any photos that visitors have sent me posted to the site, I hope to do that in the next couple of days. In the meantime, given the fact that both yourself and Pam Rhodenizer have good reasons to believe that the seated person is not Ken Mercer, the names on the photo will be corrected. Thank you for this information. |
My name is Ben Patey of Main Brook, Northern Peninsula. I am a grandson of Ken Mugford of Port Albert. Ken was a P.O.W. for 21 months. (He) fought at Beaumont Hammel and was captured March 12, 1917 and repatriated December 26, 1918. He returned to Port Albert and subsequently married Mae Hines of Sob's Arm, White Bay. They lived in Port Albert for a time and also Port Arthur and later moved to White Bay and lived in Sob's Arm and Hampton. I believe they may have lived in Summerford as well. They later moved to Roddicton where they raised their seven daughters and one surving son, one son died young. I am the oldest son of his oldest daughter Annie who was born in Port Albert and married William Patey of St. Anthony. Does anyone know where Port Arthur was/is located?
Recently I have been searching for background on the Mugford side of our family. Your information shows a Jonnie Mugford moved to Port Albert in the late 1800s. I wonder if he is John, husband of Mary Anne and father of Luke who died at Beaumont Hammel in 1916. Also is there any information to determine if Luke and Ken were related, perhaps brothers. Ken was four years younger than Luke and enlisted June 26, 1916. No doubt since they were both from Port Albert they were probably related. Ken suffered two wounds.
I am attaching a picture of Ken in his army uniform. The picture is dated January 1919. It is my picture and you have my permission to publish it in the Port Albert photo gallery.
Finally, it would be a wonderful addition to the photo gallery to have names of the people included with the photo if available. Any additional information that you can uncover about the Mugfords would be greatly appreciated. Ben W Patey - Dartmouth, NS - 31/01/09
This is certainly a treasure trove of information that you have supplied, and I'm certain that anyone looking to trace their Mugford ancestry will certainly be in touch with you!! In the meantime, if anyone can answer any of Ben's quesions, please let us know. |
I was wondering if the unidentified woman and little girl was Margaret Wagg and daughter Meggie - wife and daughter of Kenneth Wagg which would be my mother (Meggie) and her parents? My mother was born in 1925. Her mother died in child birth in 1927 or 1928. The child Alice also beleived to have died. Thank you Tammy Rowe - No Address Given - 24/01/09
If any of our readers should happen to know the answer to Tammy's question, please let us know and your information will be forwarded along to her. |
My mother, Barbara Gallant, sends her sincerest congratulations to you and your family on the birth of your first grandchild! We send our congrats, as well. May God bless the little one and the parents as they embark on a whole new lifestyle. Amy Ryzi - No Address Given - 15/12/08
Thank you Amy, and I can assure you that she is NOT spoiled.... lol... okay, perhaps just a bit!!! |
I visited Port Albert in August. What a beautiful town. Betty Weir - Inuvik, NT - 13/11/08
We kinda think that too, Betty!! Glad you enjoyed your visit. |
My name is Rhonda White and I have been in contact with you in the past. I have discovered that the Kings of Victoria Cove are my cousins. Bertham King and Paul King. I have found out that my grandfather Stanely King and Bertham King's father Hurbert King were first cousins, making my great-grandfather Samuel King and Alfred King brothers. Alfred is the father of Hurbert King. I found in the archives the birth of Alfred and it is Issac and Betsy. Do you know if the Kings of Port Albert are related to the Kings of Victoria Cove? Rhonda White - St. John's, NL - 03/10/08
On the surface, I don't know of a solid link connecting the Port Albert Kings to the Victoria Cove Kings. However, I'm certain that if one looks far enough back, there is a connection there somewhere. Ms. White has also sent along some family tree information on her research, but due to space limitations, it was not able to be posted here. If anyone would like a copy of the information she has, please write to us and we will gladly send it along to you. |
Hi Andrea Bob Slack - Ancaster, ON - 31/08/08 |
My name is Brian Saunders. I am currently living in St. Johnʼs, Newfoundland. Over the last few months I have been collecting lapel pins from different towns and cities accross Canada and the United States. My goal is to have over 1000 lapel pins collected of different towns and cities before the end of the year. If itʼs not too much trouble, I would like to request a lapel pin with your regional logo on it for my personal collection. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon. Brian Saunders - St. John's, NL - 30/08/08
Unfortunately, I don't believe that there are any pins that would show any form of coat-of-arms or settlement insignia for Port Albert. If anyone can help Mr. Saunders, please get in touch, and your information will be forwarded along to him. |

I would like to see old photos of persons that lived in the Little Beaverton / Port Albert areas and their homes there from many years ago. Fisherman, wood workers, and as many photos as possible from the area. I love looking at them. I really enjoyed this month's visit to the Elliott reunion. Looking forward to the next visit. Barbara O'Brien - Cambridge, NS - 28/08/08 |
I was hoping you could help me get in touch with Mr. Robert William Slack who commented on your site on August 10, 2008. He is a distant relative who may hold the key to figuring out the King family tree (his Grandmother Rhoda King was the sister of my Great Grandfather Albert Edward King. I know very little about the Kings because both Great Grandparents died when my grandmother (Violet Mary King) was 10 years old and she was sent to Fogo to live with her mother's sister, Julia Ann (Pelley) Leyte. Thanks so much for your help. Andrea Kean - Kitchener, ON - 27/08/08
See response from Mr. Slack above. |
(With reference to photo # 130), the correct spelling for Dawn Wagg is Donna and also in the picture is Melanie Wagg (who is) sitting in between Betty and Bernice. Bill Browne - Beaver Bank, NS - 20/08/08
Thank you for this correction. The photo has been updated. |
| I certainly hope everyone returned home safely from the Elliott Family reunion. What a time! The organizing committee out did themselves with 3 days full of wonderful memories. It was great to rekindle old memories and be a part of creating so many new ones. Thanks for bringing us back to Port Albert. I know my grandmother (Lizzie Elliott Tricco) was smiling upon us. Jeff Tricco - Scotsdale, AZ - 18/08/08 |
My name is Barb O'Brien / Pelley, Marion Burge / Pelley from Port Albert. I was home for the reunion this weekend, and I had a great time. It was great learning about the "family", things I never knew. And it's always great getting to know about one's family. Barbara O'Brien - Cambridge, NS - 12/08/08 |
I am the oldest of son of Gladys Pearl Elliott, born May 1919, daughter of Herbert Elliott and Rhoda King. I was born on January 8, 1942. Gladys passed away in 1986. My father William Robert Slack, celebrated his 93rd birthday on August 7. I have a brother Philip Elliott Slack, born Sept. 30, 1948, and a sister Marilyn Ruth Slack, born Feb. 23, 1950. I am married to Linda Carol Slack(nee Connolly, d.o.b. Oct. 30, 1943). We have two daughters Kristine Elizabeth McEllistrum (d.o.b. June 23, 1969) and Katherine Lynn Slack (d.o.b. Apr. 11, 1971). Kristine is married to David McEllistrum and they have two daughters Kyra and Alyssa. Robert William Slack - Ancaster, ON - 10/08/08 |
Wonderful job!!! Brings back a lot of memories. I am the daughter of Gordon and Rowena Elliott. Looking forward to the Elliott Reunion this weekend. I'm sure a good time will be had by all!!!! Ruth Elliott - Boyd's Cove, NL - 07/08/08 |
I've been meaning to do this for awhile, so now I will try before my guests start arriving. Thomas Elliott's first wife was Elizabeth Whiteway. As far as we know, Suzannah Coish was his second and Sarah Mercer his third. (His headstone was erected by Sarah.). Samuel Elliott was not born in 1844, but rather in 1884. His father James was not born until 1862. As far as we know, Thomas and Elizabeth had 7 children, 3 sons and 4 daughters. Thomas and Suzannah had 2 children while Thomas and Sarah had 1 child. Note the date of birth for Enos Samuel Elliott as 1882 and the date of death as 1885. The latest birth date for Thomas and Elizabeth's children is 1873 for Rhoda. We have a newspaper clipping that says Emily Elliott was 26 years old when she died. Daisy Mercer was born in 1899, the same as her twin sister Lillian. Children of Daisy and Arthur Peckford besides Francis are Lewis, Gladys and Edna. Margaret Mercer - Port Albert, NL - 28/07/08 |
On page 1 of the history, Margaret Elliott (daughter of James), date of birth is listed as July 1898, then on page 3 where she is # 10, it is listed as February 1893. Just wondering which is correct or maybe you have no way of verifying? Hope to have more additions to you soon. Marg Elliott - NS - 18/07/08 |
| No comment provided but we wanted to acknowledge your visit. Jennifer Elliott - Baytona, NL - 17/07/08 |
Port Albert was always a fun place to go with my family. I am hoping to go back someday and visit - perhaps next summer. Great job on the website Dad! Scott Alexander - Cranbrook, BC - 23/06/08 |
My father, Albert Wagg was born and raised in Port Albert. He left there in 1940. Often heard stores about people from there. Some of the old pictures had familiar names from his stories. It's efforts like this that re-connect people with their roots. Once again keep up the good work. I have some of my family tree done on the family of Albert Wagg, son of Richard, grandson of John, all of Port Albert. Let me know if you are interested Ross Wagg - Cape Breton, NS - 06/06/08
The Port Albert Project welcomes any contributions towards the various family trees that folks might want to contribute. All contributions are welcome. |
| I have just revisited the site since my last visit to Port Albert. I am thrilled to know the fine people of Port Albert and want to wish the re-union all the best. Keep my uncle Tom away from the ribs. Steve Goldsack - Kent, England - 25/05/08 |
My name is Christine Nason. I am formerly from Gambo, NL. I found out about your site from Terry Alexander, formerly from Port Albert. To my surprise, my son is married to his (2nd) cousin. The site is absolutely amazing. Keep up the good work. Christine Nason - Moncton, NB - 23/05/08 |
I would like to leave a message for Doyle W. Rose who left a message on 10 January 2008. I would like to get in touch with you as Elizabeth Whiteway Elliott is my great great grandmother, who was married to my great great grandfather Thomas Elliott. I would like to get info on her family descendants as well. Hoping that you still keep in touch with this website. You are my family too. Joyce Pelley-Gedge - Conception Bay South, NL - 23/05/08 |
Loved the site. Would like to see more pictures from the past. My mother, Edna Pelley has several. Joyce Pelley-Gedge - Conception Bay South, NL - 14/05/08
The Port Albert Project would love to have any photos that our visitors might like to share with us. Photos can be scanned and emailed, or if you would like to send them via Canada Post, please feel free to do so. All photos received via regular mail will be returned to the sender. |
I'm the daughter of Sidney (Ted) and Margaret Mercer, who currently live in Port Albert. I just spent some time browsing through this site. Absolutely precious!!! I am so thankful that someone had the interest and talent to establish and maintain this wonderful project. Valerie Mercer - Gander, NL - 09/05/08 |
Terry has done an extraordinary job on the Port Albert Project!! What a joy it is to be able to view the various memories of Port Albert through photographs. It is remarkable that people have taken the time to share their treasures. Terry is a very talented soul and I am proud to announce that he has designed a website for LanMar Logistics Inc. I look forward to future endeavours with you Terry. Congratulations!! Monique Milley-Houle - Halifax, NS - 28/04/08 |
The site looks wonderful. We are counting down the days until the Elliott reunion. August can't get here soon enough and it will be good to get out of the desert heat. Thanks again for all of your hard work. Jeff Tricco - Scottsdale, AZ - 28/04/08 |
Your new version of your old great website is outstanding! Wonderful job! I bet everyone just loves going to the site and checking it out. I see by your readers comments that lots of people are making family connections. That is so neat. Keep it up. Janice Whybourne - Thunder Bay, ON - 27/04/08 |
Your old website was great but this one is phenomenal!! Congratulations on a wonderful job! The genealogy is easy to follow and is like a road through history. I am proud to be a part of it. Judy Day Ricketts - Mount Pearl, NL - 27/04/08 |
| My fondest memory is the Mercer Family Reunion in 1979, and then spending my first Christmas home in 1989. My cousins took me out mummering, and my son, did I ever get a jag on, but it was fun.
Lorne Mercer - Windsor, ON - 22/04/08 |
| Uncle Ted, if you could as I have no pictures of the Mercer family reunion, could you please post some of them?
Lorne Mercer - No Location Disclosed - 20/04/08
It is hoped that those folks attending the upcoming reunion will indeed make photos and stories available for posting so that those descendants who are not able to make the trip will be able to get an idea of who and what they missed. |
| My husband's mother was the daughter of Adam Elliott who lived at Beaverton in the early 1900's. She was Doris Edith Elliott and she moved to Nova Scotia after the war (1919). After she passed away, some 34 years ago, we made a trip to Newfoundland to try to find Beaverton. We ended up in Port Albert - since it was the closest we could get - at the home of Ted Mercer. His father, Jackie, remembered Adam and told us many stories. Our first trip to Beaverton was in Ted Mercer's boat. What a thrill for my husband! To walk on his Grandfather's land and see the remains of the old whaling machinery. It was wonderful! We have become best of friends with Ted and Margaret and their family and have visited back and forth ever since.
Wayne & Margie Ryder - Bedford, NS - 10/04/08 |
I really enjoyed browsing your site & I am hoping someone (of my many long lost relatives of Port Albert descent) can help me as I am looking for information on my Great-Grandfather Albert Edward King (brother of Rhoda King (Herb Elliott) and my GG Grandparents Isaac & Charlotte (Bown) King. My Grandmother was Violet Mary King (married Fred Gill of Fogo) sister of Susie, Walter (Emma Mercer), Janet (Alex Mercer), Charlotte, Lizzie, Bessie, Isaac Edward, Lewis & possibly Stewart (listed as son of Walter in census but too old to be a son). Also my Great Grandmother Mary Violet Pelley (wife of Albert King). I believe she was a sister of John Pelley and Matilda Pelley (wife of Elias Day). Also, I noticed an Alexander King on your site - was he also a son of Albert & Mary King? Any help would be greatly appreciated. As well I have lots of information on the Pelley line. Andrea Kean - Kitchener, ON - 10/03/08
Alexander King (b. 01 Dec 1902), is my grandfather and the son of James King and Mary Ann Snow. He was born in the small community of Red Rock Cove on Change Islands. Like so many of Newfoundland's outport communities, the people left for economic reasons, and it was abandoned many years ago. |
My roots are in Port Albert and always will be. My great-grandmother was Rhoda Elliott Day, daughter of Thomas Elliott. She married Gideon Day. One of their children was Herbert Day who married Suzanna Crane. Their son was Max Day (married Lucy Elliott from Beaverton) who was my father and is buried in Port Albert cemetery. I am very impressed with this lovely website - so cleanly done and easy to navigate. A good job. I have many pictures which I would be glad to share if the webmaster is interested. Judy Day Ricketts - Mount Pearl, NL - 03/03/08 |
Recently Lindsay Mugford and I discovered that we had Port Albert in common. He kindly gave me the web address. My ancestors are from Port Albert. Three generations are buried in the cemetery there. Thomas Elliot's daughter, Rhoda was my great grandmother. She married Herbert Day and their son Max Day was my father. I think pretty much everyone in the community is related to me through the Mercers. My mother was a Beaverton Elliott and moved to Port Albert when she married dad. Is Dorothy Alexander your mother? The last time mom visited Port Albert, we dropped in to Lewisporte to see her, as she and my mother are friends. I raided my mom's photo album today to get some pictures for your site. I have quite a few and would scan and send them to you if you want them. You have an excellent site; I loved it. I can't wait for the weather to get good enough to bring my mother to my house to see it. Isn't Newfoundland great?! We all know each other! Judy Day Ricketts - Mount Pearl, NL - 02/03/08
Yes, Dorothy Alexander is indeed my mother. I have heard her mention your parents on many occasions. |
I wish that I could be in Port Albert for the reunion. I would be proud to be involved, and happy to see friends and family, those that I have met and especially those that I have not. I know that this will be an event to remember, but I regret that I will have to miss it. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone all the best and commend the committee for all of their efforts. I know that this is being organized with great pride. The kind of pride that comes from being part of a small community. The kind of pride that has been shown time and time again by the people of Port Albert. Although I will not be there, I still feel priviledged to have grown up in this community. Thus I am a part of it. If I could be there, I would surely be involved. Hats off to those involved in putting this historical event together. Steve Mercer - Red Deer, AB - 23/02/08 |
| I miss my old hometown where I was born and raised until I was 7. I was born there about 20 years ago and went to the last school there. I will be back for a visit again this summer. I have a lot of memories there that will stay with me always and forever. Karen Curtis - Jackson's Cove, NL - 19/02/08 |
| My name is Amy Ryzi, granddaughter of Lizzie Elliott (and daughter of Barbara Gallant). I noticed that my grandmother's birthdate is incorrect in the census records for 1921 and for the genealogy. Elizabeth Elliott, daughter of James Elliott, was born February 7, 1893. Thanks for your wonderful website. I have been enjoying it and I look forward to visiting Port Albert this summer with my family to participate in the Elliott reunion. The last time I was there was in 1972. Amy Ryzi - No Location Disclosed - 15/02/08 |
| I recently heard about this website and I am intrigued by it all. I am the youngest daughter of Eli Elliott. The memories of Port Albert are plentiful in my mind, mostly of visiting Uncle Bill and Aunt Glad, Uncle Stan and Aunt Effie, Uncle Bert and Auntie (Ruby), who had a summer home there, and Ted and Margaret Mercer. We always had a good time at Port Albert and the people were always very welcoming, especially if they knew you were an Elliott. Thank you all for the wonderful memories! I am hoping to attend the Elliott reunion this summer if at all possible. Karen (Kay) Elliott Jewer - Botwood, NL - 11/02/08 |
No comment provided but we wanted to acknowledge your visit. Melanie Browne (nee: Wagg) - Beaver Bank, NS - 11/02/08 |
| I just heard about this site today and have found it to be very interesting and informative. I am the youngest son of Eli Elliott, who was the son of Hubert and Roseabelle Elliott. I do have some fond memories of visiting Port Albert as a child. It has been about 15 years since I was there last. The Elliott family reunion sounds very interesting and if at all possible I will be attending. Keep up the great work on this website. Corwin Elliott - Lewisporte, NL - 09/02/08 |

| It is with great sadness, to tell you my sister Louise Adey Chew passed away on January 5th, 2008. I will miss her so much. She put a posting in the Port Albert site back in the fall. We were so hoping to come to Port Albert in the coming summer, to visit the town where our grandmother Cinderella Mugford came from. I will still try to make that visit. Betty Adey Weir - Inuvik, NT - 18/01/08 |
| I am e-mailing a picture of one of the schooner models used by my grandfather James Elliott (Skipper Jim) as he was known to everyone. The name of the schooner which was built in the early ninteen hundreds using this model has been erased with age. Skipper Jim was the son of Thomas Elliott, my great-grandfather, and as you have already stated on your website, was the first settler in Little Beaver Cove, renamed Port Albert in 1916. Thomas was also the first lighthouse keeper on south end, Change Islands. As a boy I was told that my grandfather (Skipper Jim) started building at a very young age and was a master builder in his early twenties. Access to a good supply of timber was the number one reason for their move to Port Albert. The schooners that he built were called "cutwaters" because of the shape of their stem. On your genealogy page names of the schooners, the last one on the list ELNAE should read ELRAE. It was built for a Mr. Earle of Fogo who wanted her christened with his name spelled backwards. Sidney (Ted) Mercer - Port Albert, NL - 13/01/08 |
| I was born in Port Albert, Ontario, and came across your highly entertaining and truly informative site by accident. Top marks to the wonderful people of Port Albert, Newfoundland, for the terrific website. It is one of the best, if not the VERY BEST, I have seen for such a small place. I found the information in this site simply outstanding. Even though I have never been to your community, it was truly enjoyable reading the information on the various pages and looking at the photographs, etc. Everyone who lives in, or comes from Port Albert should be proud. TOP MARKS! David McGee - Timmins, ON - 05/01/08 |

| I just found out about this site and I think it's great. I am a grandson of Elizabeth Elliott (daughter of James Elliott). I first visited in 1972. I loved it so much that I returned in 1973, 1974 and many times since. I'm looking forward to returning again. David Tricco - West Roxbury, MA - 30/12/07 |
| This small community is very dear to my heart. My memories of this place is something that allows me to escape to a time and place where one can forget about the worries and troubles of the world. I hope to someday return to my home to live out my life, away from all the stress that life gives us. This is my home... always was... always will be. David Alexander - Riverview, NB - 20/12/07 |
| I'm Marie Elliott, and I must first congratulate you on the Port Albert site. It's very informative and friendly. I'm married to Dave Elliott, son of Harold Elliott , grandson of James, and great-grandson of Thomas Elliott, who settled in Port Albert in 1883. That's our Elliott lineage and connection to Port Albert. Thank you for noting the Elliott family reunion. It would be great if you could post our invitation. It's in the works and should be ready soon. Marie Elliott - Corner Brook, NL - 02/12/07 |

| I am Tom and Lilly Mercer's nephew and a past visitor to Port Albert in 1984, during hurricane Gloria!! I was reading the "Those That Served" page and noticed that Tom Mercer had died 11th April 1916. Is this an ancestor of my Uncle Tom, I mean direct ancestor as obviously they would be related? If so I would point out that my cousins Alex, Denise and Stephen would have lost two of their great-grandfathers on exactly the same day during 1916. A strange coincidence if true. I would like to send you a piece about my visit and the vivid memories I still have for the most wonderful village in the world. Biased opinion, but I live in Kent where we have some of the world's loveliest villages dating back to 400 AD and I still rate Port Albert above these. I love the site and thank Steve, my cousin, for putting me onto it. Steve Goldsack - Kent, England - 25/11/07 |
| Very interesting. Very well done Kaye Peckford - Mississauga, ON - 24/11/07 |
My daughter (Viki) and my parents (Ted and Margaret Mercer) have told me several times about this site. I think they were getting a tad miffed with me for not looking at it yet, so I finally took the time to have a look see what the fuss was all about. They should have told me. Ha ha. I love it and can't wait for more info to be added. I have bookmarked it for faster access because after spending all day on a computer at work, sitting in front of one when I am home is not the number one thing to do. I grew up in Port Albert and no matter where I have lived, when someone asks me where I am from, I automatically say Port Albert, even though I haven't lived there for 18 years. Lorraine Wilson - Gander, NL - 22/11/07 |
| Great idea. My mom is from Port Albert, she is the daughter of Daisy & Lewis Peckford. Denise Steele - ON - 15/11/07 |
I just found this website while visiting the Lewisporte Pilot. Great Job! I have relatives in Port Albert. Daisy Peckford was my mother's sister. We had great times there. Many special memories. It is a great little community and I have photos that I may share when I have more time. Judy Edwards - Horwood, NL - 12/11/07 |
Nice job on the website. Lots of information there, some good old pictures. I have a few back home that I need to get scanned. I'll try and submit then. I'm Dwight Elliott, Bert and Ruby Elliott's son. We had a "summer home" in Port Albert from the mid 1970's and moved there ( from Gander) in 1981. I went to Centennial Central High School until I graduated and went to MUN in St. John's in 1986. Our house was one my father built right across the road from Uncle Bill Elliott's house. I'm not sure if we've met recently, but I remember your name from when I lived in Port Albert. What a great job you've done on the website! A lot of research and some really great memories and background you've put together. I found your site when my wife was looking at the Lewisporte Pilot story about your website online. Myself and my family are currently living in Stavanger, Norway. I've been working over here as a Structural Designer for Aker Kvaerner since this past January. We were home for a quick visit this past July, but was so rushed we didn't get to see hardly anyone. Ted and Margaret (Mercer) were up to visit Mom and Dad (in Brown's Arm currently) and I got to see them on their visit. Enclosed are a few pictures of Port Albert taken this summer. I am indeed the legal owner of these pictures and hereby grant you permission to use them in your website "portalbert.ca". I am also attaching a picture taken from a display at the Beaumont Hamel Historic site that myself and my son visited in northern France last month. The display is a list of communities in Newfoundland that contributed sons and daughters to the Armed Forces in WW 1. I took a picture pointing out "Port Albert" listed on this plaque. I have more "hardcopy" pictures from Port Albert at home in Nova Scotia. When I get back there (maybe next summer!) I'll forward them on to you. Dwight Elliott - Cole Harbour, NS - 10/11/07 |
Great site. I am Lewis and Daisy Peckford's granddaughter. My mom is Marie Peckford. I love all the old pic's. I may have some to add. Denise Steele - ON - 09/11/07 |
| Great Website. A note to Pam Rhodenizer (nee:Elliott). There is an Elliott reunion in the planning for August 2008 at Port Albert. I would like for you to get in touch with us. We are Elliott decendants. Our phone number is 709-241-3271. And Terry we hope to have something to add to your site later on. Ted & Margaret Mercer - Port Albert, NL - 07/11/07 |
I think we have identified folks in picture #93. I am Brian Gallant, the grandson of Lizzie Elliott. I was down there the year it was taken (1968). My mother is Barbara Gallant (Tricco) and she remembers the picture. Front row left to right is May Pincent, her mother Hilda Sheppard, Hallie Bennett is correct, and Lizzie Elliott is on the right. Her married name was Tricco. Elsie King is holding the child in the back. Hilda Sheppard was Hilda Elliott, Lizzie Elliott's sister. Great website. Brian Gallant - Tewksbury, MA - 07/11/07 |

Hello folks!! And a special hello to Louise!!! It's Mugsy from The Kitchen. We had a few chats there... lol lol. Well you know for sure we are related. I will place my email address, if that is ok with the webmaster, for anyone to contact me. It is lindsay_angie06@hotmail.com. Looking forward in hearing from my Mugford relatives!!! | I really enjoyed browsing your website. I am one of the names listed in the list of teachers on this site. In addition to teaching in Port Albert I was also a resident for almost a year and a half. I am now in my 30th and final year of teaching and can say with all honesty that the three years that I spent teaching in Port Albert were the most relaxed and enjoyable years of my teaching career. Doug Warren - Clarke's Head, NL - 19/10/07 |
| Our family lived in Port Albert for a few months around 1962. My grandparents are Alex and Elsie King and my father is Roland King. I had a little friend there, Loretta Mercer. Does anyone know where she is now and if so a big hello to her and all my friends in Port Albert who might remember me. The memories are vivid, very very special and will never be forgotten. Please email me at patsyday@hotmail.com. Patsy Day (nee: King) - Corner Brook, NL - 10/10/07 |
| Loved your site. I visited Port Albert some years ago. Don Hann - Scarborough, ON - 08/10/07 |
Loved seeing this site. I'm a past visitor (to Port Albert) and family of the Mercers and my greatest childhood memories are having fun with all my cousins and their cousins, going to dances and generally living the Newfie way for three weeks. I will direct all my kin to this site and hope they too will love reading and hearing about where our Uncle Tom came from and where all our cousins were born and bred. Regards to all those still there after all these years. Steve Goldsack - No Location Disclosed - 08/10/07 |
The Port Albert Project! When I thought I've heard it all. Great job. It's nice to see my home town will forever be remembered now. A great thanks to the people who put the hard work into this site. It's always good to see that I can always go back to look at the history of my favorite little town. Christopher Elliott - Slave Lake, AB - 07/10/07 |
WOW!!! What a beautiful site. Please keep up the good work. I am originally from Port Albert. I still visit my parents there frequently. Can't wait to see more old pics of the harbour. Tammy Head (nee: Powell) - Wing's Point, NL - 07/10/07 |
I was born and raised in Port Albert but now live in Alberta. It was so nice to see pictures of home because no matter where I live it will always be home to me. It's a great site, even though it made me homesick. No place like THE ROCK. Sandra Langer (nee: Elliott) - Bonnyville, AB - 03/10/07 |
| I think I may have found an error in the identification in one of the photos (photo #004, courtesy of Mrs. Dorothy Alexander). It's the picture of the two young men just before they went to war. They are identified as Ken and Luke Mugford. I'm pretty sure that the young man seated on the left is my grandfather, William Welmar Elliott, not Ken Mugford. I have childhood memories of seeing similar pictures of my grandfather as a young man. Unfortunately I don't have them, but I'll see if I can locate them. I know that he was overseas (my grandmother came to Newfoundland from London as a war bride), and I know he served in the Newfoundland Regiment because I have a large picture of him in his uniform. I don't know if he actually saw any action. Anyone have any info? Pam Rhodenizer (nee: Elliott) - Conception Bay South, NL - 02/10/07 |
Very nice site! Are you aware of "Port Albert - History of Port Albert" by Bill Elliott? According to this Bill Elliott, the first settler in Port Albert (then known as Little Beaver Cove) was a Thomas Elliott, born about 1834. His first wife was Elizabeth Whiteway from Muddy Hole (now known as Musgrave Harbour). It was after Elizabeth's death that Thomas moved to Little Beaver Cove with his three sons and four daughters. I am interested in the Whiteway clan. My great-great-great-grandfather was William Whiteway of Western Bay and he was also the great-grandfather of Elizabeth, who married Thomas Elliott. I have done some research on the families of Port Albert and would love to hear from anybody who is interested in the genealogy of Port Albert. Doyle W Rose, Sr. - St. John's, NL - 01/10/07 |
Very interesting. I have some photos of my years teaching at Port Albert Elementary. May share some with you in the near future. Wayne Gillingham - Port Albert, NL - 01/10/07 |
| Excellent website. Congratulations. Off and on I've been tracking down what I can about my grandfather, William Welmar Elliott (1897? - 1961), son of Herbert and Rhoda Elliott. As I understand it, some of their children were born in Port Albert and others were born on Change Islands. I'm not sure of the details, and anybody in our immediate family who would have the family history is deceased. Any info would be appreciated. Pam Rhodenizer (nee: Elliott) - 30/09/07 |
| I was trying to see about the Mercer family and find out about the one true love that I had and got away, aka Gwen. Todd Gillingham - Brampton, ON - 30/09/07 |
Wow, I can't believe my sister Betty got in here before I did. Nice going, Miss Smarty Pants. I'm from the Adey family in Twillingate, and my grandmother Cinderella, was from Port Albert. Private Luke Mugford, who died in World War 1, was her brother. I left Twillingate many years ago and never really knew where Port Albert was, but on my next trip to Nfld, Port Albert will be on my list of places to visit. This is a wonderful site, and so much information. Louise Chew - Lakefield, ON - 29/09/07 |
I found your web site while browsing on the Lewisporte Pilot. I am living in Inuvik, NWT. I found it to be very interesting to me. My Grandmother was Cinderella Mugford from Port Albert. I know she had a brother called George, and a sister called Melinda, I think. My grandmother married Joseph Wheeler from Summerford. I would like to find out if she was related to Samuel Mugford, from Port Albert, or if she has any living relatives who still reside in Port Albert, or if there is any of the older residents there that would remember her. My mother's name was Clara Belle, and married George Adey from Twillingate, where she raised twelve of us kids. I grew up in Twillingate, NL. I will be visiting there next year, and will be looking forward to visiting Port Albert. Betty Adey Weir - Inuvik, NT - 28/09/07 |
I'm from Stoneville, but have a brother living in Port Albert. My husband is from the States. He visited Port Albert in Nov 2006 and loved it. Annie Brenton - Acworth, GA - 28/09/07 |
I am originally from Port Albert and this site does bring back some wonderful memories. It is so nice to see the old pictures of Port Albert and the people that once lived there as I remember them growing up. I will go through our family photos in the next few days and see if I have anything to contribute. Looking forward to the updates!! Loretta Hart (nee: Mercer) - Campbellton, NL - 27/09/07 |
I read about this site in our local newspaper this week and had to check it out. My family is originally from Port Albert. My grandmother/grandfather is Jessie May Mercer and the late Scymour Mercer and my mother is Loretta Mercer-Hart. I spent many summers in Port Albert as a young child with my grandmother and have fond memories of it, one being visiting the store next door (owned by Meta and the late Cecil Mercer) nearly everyday to buy candy. The store and my nan's house are both long gone but the memories will always remain!! I loved this site. A job very well done!! I will dig out some of nan's old photos in the next few days and send them along. Nicole Hart - Campbellton, NL - 27/09/07 |
I saw your site mentioned in The Pilot. I am very impressed. I host our site and will link with yours. Victor Cassell - Cottlesville, NL - 27/09/07 |
I'm originally from Port Albert, and since I only live 10 minutes away now, I visit often. My son is doing a project in school on Port Albert, and we found out about this website today in the local newspaper, The Pilot. We just checked it out and we both found it very interesting. You've done a great job. I hope more people will add to this information. Maybe when I get a chance I will add something. Renee Nippard (nee: Peckford) - Stoneville, NL - 26/09/07 |

I am from Port Albert and it will always be my home. I would like to say there is no better place on God's green earth. The people from there are the best, and you know no matter where you go, everyone will treat you like one of their own. That's what makes Port Albert the best place in the world to live. With God's help I pray someday to be able to move back to Port Albert and live out the rest of my days. Thank you so much for starting this site so Port Albert will never be forgotten. Todd J Powell - Thunder Bay, ON - 10/09/07 |
My wife Angie and I listened to the October gale story tonight, and I must say I had to laugh. My wife told me that she finally found out where I got my "stubbornness" from..ha ha ha. I guess it runs in the family. Anyway, it brought a tear to hear this... keep the stories coming. Lindsay Mugford - Brampton, ON - 24/08/07 |
What a great job on the site. I remember going to Port Albert to stay with Uncle Fred and Aunt Winnie for a week in the summer, and going to the small store in the house on the corner.
