Port Albert - A Short History
In October 1883, Thomas ELLIOTT (b Mar 1834) from Musgrave Harbour, being a fisherman who owned a schooner and fished on the Labrador, and Musgrave Harbour not being a harbour for schooners, he was looking for a harbour. So when he reached Port Albert, then Little Beaver Cove, he said "This is it!"
Thomas ELLIOTT's first wife had passed away a few years before. After a couple of years, he met Sarah MERCER, a widow on Indian Islands. Thomas ELLIOTT had three sons by his first wife and four daughters. Mrs. MERCER had two sons and a daughter.
So Thomas ELLIOTT came with his sons in October, stayed on board his schooner while they built a log cabin for the coming winter. When they had it completed they moved. Him, his sons, daughters, Mrs. MERCER's sons and daughter. Those were the first settlers in Beaver Cove.

How To Read This Information
The information contained within the list of descendants of Thomas Elliott (click on link at bottom of article) may be a bit confusing at first, but a couple of examples of how to interpet it should make things easier.
You will note that to the left of each name in the list, there is either a lower case Roman numeral (eg v, vi, vii) or on the extreme left, a regular number. The lower case Roman numeral is how the children of each set of parents are numbered. The regular number to the extreme left indicates where more information can be found for the individual in question.
Let's use the example of Thomas Elliott, being as he is at the top of the list. If you will notice, the number 1 appears to the left of his name. That means that he is the starting point for the entire descendant tree. If you look below his name, you will see 9 children listed, beginning with Enos Samuel Elliott (i) and ending with Emily Elliott (ix).
The second child in the list, James Elliott, has the number 2 which appears to the extreme left of his name. This indicates that there is more information about this person further along in the list. In this particular case, you will find that information where you again see the number 2 on the extreme left.
One other note about reverse reading of the numbers. Each person has an ancestory numbering system. What this means is that you can trace how many generations they are away from the main individual (in this case Thomas Elliott), and whom their forefathers were. A couple of examples might help to better explain this.
2. JAMES2 ELLIOTT (THOMAS1) was born April 1862, and died August 25, 1928. He married ELIZA ABBOTT.
8. SAMUEL3 ELLIOTT (JAMES2, THOMAS1) was born March 1844. He married MARY JANE MERCER, daughter of AMBROSE MERCER and ELIZABETH CRANE.
In the first example, the number 2 by James' name indicates that he is in the second generation of the Elliott lineage, and that his father is Thomas1 Elliott.
In the second example, we can see that Samuel is in the third generation of the lineage (indicated by the number 3 next to his name), and that his father is James2 Elliott, and that his grandfather is Thomas1 Elliott.
It is realized that this information is far from complete and subject to errors. Here's where we need your help. If you know of errors contained within this descendant tree, please contact us and we will update the file accordingly.
