Coronation Day parade in Port Albert celebrating the ascension of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne of England on 02 June 1953. Judy Day Ricketts remembers that she was 9 years old at the time, and that every child in Newfoundland received a tin of candy with a picture of the Queen on the lid.
The building in the background was known as the "Mailmans Shack". It contained bunks and a makeshift stove, and was where mailmen stayed if they had to overnight in Port Albert while on their rounds to the various outport communities. It was located down over the hill from where the second school building was situated.
The older lady on the left in the white flowery dress, standing in front of the "Mailmans Shack" is Mary Jane Elliott (nee Mercer). The lady in the foreground immediately below the large Union Jack is Lilly Wagg. The shorter lady to her left, and who is looking straight at the camera is Emma Mercer, and the lady whose head appears between Emma and Lilly is that of Marion Elliott.
The lady to the right of Lilly Wagg, wearing the white blouse and looking off to the right is Jenny Mercer, and the lady to the right of Jenny is her mother-in-law, Emma Mercer.
The young man on the right leaning on the banner is Gerald Mercer. If anyone can identify any other individuals, please let us know.
