Although not highly defined in the photo on the right, it appears that the item hanging around Margaret Mercer's neck could be the Memorial Cross that was presented to her after the death of her son, Private Thomas Mercer. It bears a close resemblance to the image of the Memorial Cross on the left, and only seems plausible that she would wear it in memory of her precious son.
